MarketCloud will now be known as Shawn Wright Digital Marketing. Why the change you ask? It’s simple, I came to the realization that my company brand and my personal brand are the same thing. I didn’t come to this new name change lightly, it took years.
When I first decided to work for myself in the late 1980’s, I knew one thing. I was not going to name my business Shawn Wright & Associates. The term “& Associates” screamed out “one-man and a desk.” Today, one-man and a desk is typical, even desired, within the entrepreneurial community. Not so back then. There was a distinct lack of respect for the one-man shop.
When I graduated from college I branded myself DesignWright. If you wanted your project designed right, you came to DesignWright. This worked pretty well for me. To this day I have a box of business cards in my desk drawer that I can’t seem to part with. DesignWright was used when I was was freelancing during the off hours of my full-time job and I kept it when I went out on my own.
During the early 90’s I hatched a plan with a couple of friends to start a “real” business. When it came time to select a name I was adamant that I did not want to use our last names. Wheeler, Wright & Free sounded like a law firm and I was not about to have Free Advertising as part of my business name. In the end, Mr. Free decided not to make the move with us and we settled on the name Atticus Communications.
We named the company after Atticus Finch from the book To Kill A Mockingbird. The name Atticus is well known in the south and many people related to the characters in the book. Our mascot on marketing materials was my labrador retriever. This was a great move. It was remarkable how many people named their labs after characters from the book. Atticus, Scout and Boo being the most popular.
A couple of things stand out from when we first opened our doors as Atticus. The main things our clients were impressed with were:
- A dedicated fax machine
- A phone system with a professionally recorded voice message
- An office space
As silly as this sounds now, these were big deals. Having these meant we were legit, we could be trusted, we were true professionals.
After 12 years, Atticus as a business was winding down and It was time for new opportunities. After spending a few years in another field, I decided to go back to my first love – marketing and advertising.
I chose the name MarketCloud to brand myself and my business because it suggested marketing in the cloud.
Since the days of Atticus Communications, there have been changes in how we market. There is less reliance on traditional outbound marketing and more reliance on inbound marketing. We’re taking advantage of the web, emails and other digital mediums to drive traffic back to websites and help our clients get recognized by their prospects.
Earlier this year I had a conversation with the head of a department of one of my clients. They had a very hard time with the fact that MarketCloud and Shawn Wright are one and the same. That’s when the light went on. Maybe I should just brand myself. Maybe I need to revisit my long held beliefs on how businesses perceive small and one-man shops.
I chose the business name Shawn Wright Digital Marketing. It tells the client who they will be dealing with and the type of work they will be receiving. For me, I can now spend my time branding myself and not worry about MarketCloud.
It’s a big change to start from scratch and rebrand your company. It has taken me 30 years to get here.
