A Longstanding Birmingham Design Practice
Shawn began his career in the mid-1980s in traditional print production and paste-up, transitioning fully to digital design by the early 1990s. By the mid-1990s, he was designing websites as the web became a practical communication tool for organizations.
From 1997 to 2009, he was a partner at Atticus Communications, where he worked on branding, print, and digital projects while also participating in client strategy and business operations.
In 2009, he transitioned to an independent freelance practice under Shawn Wright Graphic Design, where he continues to work directly with clients across higher education, healthcare, and financial, industrial, and technical sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of clients do you work with?
I primarily work with higher education institutions, healthcare organizations, financial services companies, and industrial or technical businesses. That said, I’m open to working with organizations in any industry that value clear communication, thoughtful design, and a collaborative process.
Much of my work involves organizing complex information and presenting it in a way that is accessible, credible, and easy to use—skills that translate well across many types of projects.
Do you work with clients outside Birmingham?
Yes. While I’m based in Birmingham, Alabama, I work with clients throughout the Southeast and beyond.
Do you work with clients outside Birmingham?
Yes. While I’m based in Birmingham, Alabama, I work with clients throughout the Southeast and beyond.
Do you still design print materials?
Absolutely. Print design and production-ready files are a core part of my practice, including annual reports, brochures, and long-form publications.
Do you offer website design?
Yes. I design WordPress websites that prioritize clarity, usability, and content structure rather than trends or gimmicks.
Are you currently accepting new projects?
Yes. I’m currently accepting select freelance projects depending on scope, timeline, and fit.
I’ve never worked with a graphic designer before. How does the process usually work?
Most projects begin with a conversation about your goals, audience, timeline, and any existing materials. From there, I provide guidance on scope, deliverables, and next steps. I don’t expect clients to know design terminology—part of my job is helping you clarify what you need and translating that into effective design.
How much does graphic design typically cost?
Costs vary based on the scope, complexity, and timeline of a project. After an initial discussion, I provide a clear estimate or project fee so there are no surprises. I’m always upfront about pricing and happy to talk through options if budget is a concern.
What if I’m not sure exactly what I need?
That’s very common. Many clients come in with a general idea rather than a detailed brief. I help define the scope, ask the right questions, and recommend solutions that fit your goals—whether that’s a full redesign or a more focused update.
What information should I have ready before contacting you?
If you have it, it helps to know:
-
What you’re trying to accomplish
-
Who the audience is
-
Any deadlines or constraints
-
Examples of materials you like or dislike
If you don’t have all of this, that’s okay—we can work through it together.
How do we get started?
The first step is a conversation. You can contact me by email or through the contact form on this site, and I’ll follow up to learn more about your project and see if it’s a good fit.
Let's Talk About Your Project
Questions are always welcome. I’m happy to talk through a project with no obligation.
