Print and Publication Design

Print is where I started, and it remains at the center of my work. A brochure, a program booklet, or a book is something people hold, keep on a desk, and come back to. It has to look right and read clearly every time someone picks it up. I'm Shawn Wright, a Birmingham graphic designer, and I've designed print for universities, healthcare organizations, foundations, and companies for more than 40 years.

Print clients have included:
UAB Honors College • UAB School of Education and Human Sciences • UAB School of Optometry • Alabama Power • Baptist Medical Center • Regions Bank • Alabama Department of Environmental Management • JBS Mental Health Authority • McCool & Bhuta ENT • St. Martin's in the Pines • First Avenue Ventures • Market Table • Birmingham Olympic Soccer • and many others

What I Design

  • Brochures and capabilities pieces: what you do and why it matters, clearly explained
  • Program booklets and guides: single pieces or coordinated sets for different audiences
  • Books and long-form publications: cover and interior design, with guidance on printing and publishing options when you need it
  • Pocket folders and inserts: presentation materials that work together
  • Maps and specialty pieces: when the format is part of the message

A Straightforward Process

Many of my clients come back project after project. I keep the process simple: clear communication, realistic schedules, and work delivered on time and on budget.

  • Conversation. We talk through the purpose, audience, content, and deadline.
  • Concept. I develop a design direction for your approval.
  • Layout. The full piece comes together, page by page.
  • Review and refinement. Your team reviews and I refine it until it's right.
  • Final files. You receive press-ready PDFs for your printer.
  • Most print projects take 3 to 6 weeks. The biggest factor is when content and approvals are ready.

Complex Information, Made Clear

Much of my print work involves long or information-heavy documents: program details, data tables, footnotes, timelines, and dozens of pages that need to feel consistent from start to finish. Organizing that information so readers can find what they need is the part of the job I enjoy most.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a brochure or booklet cost?

It depends on size, page count, amount of content, and any photography or illustration. Every project starts with a conversation and a written estimate.

How long does a print project take?

Most take 3 to 6 weeks, depending mostly on when content is ready and how long approvals take.

Do you write the copy?

Your team provides the copy, or I can help you find an experienced copywriter.

Do you handle printing?

I deliver press-ready PDF files. You contract and pay your printer directly, and I'm glad to coordinate with them for you.

Can you redesign an existing piece?

Yes. Whether it's a refresh of last year's brochure or a complete redesign, we'll start with what you have.

Can you work within our brand guidelines?

Yes. Much of my work has been for companies such as UAB and Regions Bank, which have detailed brand standards. Working within a system is part of the job.
